ATC Holds Practical Nursing 2006 Pinning Ceremony

2006-nursing-classAltamaha Technical College held their annual Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony on December 7th, 2006 on the Jesup Campus.  ATC practical nursing school pins were awarded to 20 individuals who made up the 2006 graduating class.  The pin becomes part of the nurses’ uniform and symbolizes the right to serve others.

Sandra Mager, MD, from the Women’s Health Center of Jesup, was invited by the graduating class to serve as keynote speaker for the evening.  She gave words of inspiration and guidance to the graduates.  With the value of compassion being the theme of her speech, Mager tells them “Everyday you have the opportunity to touch the lives of your patients and make people remember you for your care and compassion.”  Mager also adds the importance of nurses in the medical field saying that “Without the assistance of the nurses I have, I would not be the physician I am today.”  Finally, Mager closes with the words of one of the most famous pioneers of the nursing profession, Florence Nightingale, who said, “I never gave or took any excuse.”

During the ceremony, each graduate was presented an ATC nursing pin by Practical Nursing Instructors, Dailene McDaniel, RN, and Teresa Mosely, RN.  The graduates also received a class flower from Clinical Instructor, Tina Pate, RN.  Linda Fountain, a representative of Gideon International Auxiliary, and Practical Nursing Instructor Virginia Lea Rothwell, RN, BSN, presented each graduate with a new testament which is used to minister to the spiritual needs of a patient.

Special recognition was awarded to three of the students for academic achievement and dedication to the program and the nursing profession.  Cindy Turner received the Professional Award, Jaqueline Spell received the Shirley G. Davis Clinical Award, and Sarah “Sissie” James received the Kiwanis Scholastic Achievement Award for having the highest GPA in the graduating class.

Many of the graduates received the Elwanda Carter Perfect Attendance Award (PA), are graduating as honor graduates (HG) with a 3.5 GPA or higher, and/or are a member of the National Technical Honors Society (NTHS).  The ATC 2006 Practical Nursing Class includes Tiffany Anderson, Cindy Turner Bailey, Patricia Jackson Dear (NTHS), Carlos Fernandez Hudson (PA), Tina Williams-Hudson, Sarah “Sissie” Thompson James (PA)(NTHS)(HG), Schmeka Kennedy, Cassandra L. Love, Angela Menzies (NTHS)(HG), Angela Rena Moody (PA), Deanna Marie Mosley (NTHS)(HG), Amy Renee O’Neal, Efrain Guzman-Rosario, Kimberly Roberson (NTHS), Chanel Robin Schenck (PA), Jaquelin Altman Spell, Yang Suk Stone (PA), Teresa Ann Tripp (NTHS)(HG), Christy Rozier Waher, and Katy Yeomans (NTHS)(HG).
