Altamaha Technical College recognizes graduates

JESUP, Ga. (January 23, 2012) – Altamaha Technical College held its winter graduation ceremony Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Unity Church of God in Jesup.

Before a large crowd, and assisted by Board Chairman Randal Morris of Glynn County, Altamaha Technical College President Lorette Hoover conferred 287 associate degrees, diplomas, technical certificates of credit and General Education Diplomas (GED) to an excited Class of 2011, most whom completed their coursework during the Fall 2011 semester. A total of 284 students completed their GED during the Fall 2011 semester with 26 who elected to participate in graduation.

Ga. Representative Alex Atwood (R-Brunswick) addressed the graduates as the keynote speaker, encouraging the graduating class to always strive for success in both their personal and professional lives. Rep. Atwood earned his advanced education while working full-time so he understands intimately what it is like to be a non-traditional student, explained President Hoover.

Rep. Atwood currently serves on the Judiciary (non-civil), Insurance, and Information and Audits House committees, and was recently elected to serve as the Vice-Chair of the newly formed 1st Congressional District Delegation. He is the Senior Partner of the Atwood Law Firm, PC, with offices in Atlanta and Brunswick. He served 34 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in both ground and aviation positions and retired at the rank of full Colonel.

Lonnie Roberts, Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Altamaha Technical College, served as the graduation’s emcee, welcoming the graduating class, faculty, staff, family and friends. Margaret Brunson, Cosmetology Instructor, led the singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” and Regina Traficante, a GED graduate, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Robert Sloan, a CompTIA A+ graduate, gave the invocation. Cassandra D. Ray, an AAS in Criminal Justice graduate, presented the “Student’s Point of View” and Walt Pinder, Dean for Academic Affairs, gave the Roll Call of Graduates. Karla Eubanks, Vice President for Student Affairs, assisted Board Chair Morris in presenting the Academic Awards, while Dr. June McLain, Vice President for Academic Affairs, assisted President Hoover in both presenting the President’s Scholastic Medal and recognizing the Honor Graduates. Roberts gave the closing remarks followed by Sloan, who gave the benediction. Altamaha Technical College thanks the members of Unity Church of God for allowing the College to use their spacious facilities for both the ceremony and reception.
