Altamaha Technical College students elected to state offices at Student Professional Development Conference

(February 13, 2012) – Three Altamaha Technical College students were elected to state offices during the 2012 Student Professional Development Conference, held Feb. 10-11 at Wiregrass Technical College in Valdosta.

David McDuffie, a Machine Tool Technology student on the Jesup campus, was elected as a 2012 officer of the National Technical Honor Society. Ashlee Graham, a Criminal Justice Technology student on the Golden Isles campus, and Matthew Tootle, a Criminal Justice Technology student on the Jesup campus, were both elected to serve on the Statewide Student Leadership Council board.

These three students launched a full campaign, complete with slogans, speeches, t-shirts and other giveaways, prior to winning the popular vote of their peers during the state election at the weekend conference.

“All three of our students who ran were selected for state office,” said Tracy Brummett, Special Services Coordinator who also attended the trip as a student advisor. “We are so excited for each of them!”

Tootle’s campaign featured the slogan of “Root for Toot” and he gave out colorful children’s whistles. Graham encouraged people to remember her as “Golden Graham” as she gave out the Golden Graham teddy bear-shaped cookies. McDuffie’s campaign was based on a Simpson’s cartoon character, “Duff Cola”.

Altamaha Technical College also celebrates Latonya Kirksey, a Computer Information Systems-Networking student on the Golden Isles campus, who placed third in the Job Interview competition.

Combined, eight student organization officers representing Student Leadership Council (SLC) and National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) and two advisors represented Altamaha Technical College at the conference. The conference was designed for students to compete in Job Interview, Prepared Speech and Chapter Display competitions, said Brummett. The students were also able to attend leadership sessions hosted by the Technical College System of Georgia.

“We are proud of our students and their achievements at the state level,” said Altamaha Technical College President Lorette Hoover. “Their current success is indicative of the continued success we expect to see and hear from them as they complete their education and enter the workforce in their respective fields.”

Altamaha Technical College representatives and their respective student organization or advisory role include Brummett (advisor), Cassie Ray (NTHS), Ashlee Graham (SLC), Satonya Cannon (SLC), Cathy Montgomery (advisor), Derek Graham (SLC), David McDuffie (NTHS), Latonya Kirksey (SLC), Gwendolyn Jackson (SLC), and Matthew Tootle (SLC).
