Funding is a success story for Camden
The approval of initial funding for the Altamaha Technical College Campus this week by the Georgia Legislature bodes well for the future of the community.
We are proud of the multi-lateral support this effort received. State Sen. William Ligon and State Rep. Jason Spencer — working closely with leaders from the county government, all three cities, the college and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base — helped reinforce the idea that this project would not only be beneficial to Camden County, but to Georgia as a whole.
The donation of the campus site by the Gross family also provided an attractive incentive for the state to invest in this project.
The Chamber of Commerce worked in tandem with our joint development authority and local officials to bring awareness to state legislators of the need for the campus. Before their trip to Atlanta just a few months ago, no funds had been allocated for this project.
The approval of these initial funds makes it far more likely that we will see additional funds in the future to help spur growth and development at this critical educational institution.
Camden County has untapped potential. It is rich with available resources, ideally situated near water, interstate and rail and has a great quality of life to offer. The technical college campus may be the missing ingredient that we need to attract the type of employers who will expand and diversify our tax base. At the same time, it offers more educational opportunities to the people who live in the Camden County area. We think it is a true win-win situation for our community.
