Jesup – Recently, the Jesup Rotary Club donated funds for scholarships to benefit students pursuing their General Education Diploma (GED) through the Adult Literacy program at Altamaha Technical College.  Acknowledging the scholarships, College President Lorette Hoover said, “Through the generous giving of organizations like the Jesup Rotary Club, we can help students who otherwise may not be able to afford the fee required to take the GED examination.  With financial assistance, this hurdle can be overcome and can enable individuals to complete the first steps towards real success.”   In Georgia, approximately 1,082,210 residents have the minimum basic literacy skills.

In the college’s seven county service delivery area, the percentage of people over 25 years of age without a high school diploma or GED ranges from 16.7% to 36.7% of the population.  The Adult Literacy Program’s faculty and staff at Altamaha Technical College work diligently to improve the literacy rate by providing instruction and the tutorial support needed for individuals to prepare for the GED exam.  Last fiscal year, the college’s program served more than 2,000 students and awarded more than 500 GED’s in the seven-county area.  Students awarded a GED can easily advance through higher education and in the workplace.    Those interested in knowing more about the GED program and scholarships can contact the Altamaha Technical College’s Adult Literacy program at 912.427.5822.
