Altamaha Technical College offers lifesaving training throughout seven county region

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (Nov. 1, 2011)— Joe Herrin of Brunswick is in the business of saving lives.

As Altamaha Technical College’s only American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center Coordinator, Herrin schedules and often leads CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training and certification classes throughout the college’s expanded, seven county regional territory, ranging from Brunswick and the Golden Isles north to Hazlehurst, Ga.

Herrin brings a lot of experience to his instruction as a captain of the Glynn County Fire Department, with over 25 years of experience.

“Currently, Altamaha Technical College has 200 Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) instructors, 100 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) instructors and 50 Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) instructors thanks to the training we’re able to provide through the American Heart Association,” said Herrin.

The AHA training is one component of Altamaha Technical College’s commitment to increase economic development service opportunities throughout its regional footprint. Hank Hobbs of Altamaha Technical College’s Economic Development division encourages companies and individuals to take advantage of AHA training through Altamaha Technical College by contacting Joe Herrin and setting up either an individual class schedule or a group workshop.

Herrin recently led a two-day class for the Brunswick Fire Department to retrain and certify firefighters on Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), a certification that is required to be updated and maintained every two years by paramedics. The PALS training included the AHA’s November, 2010 changes to CPR performance.

“It used to be that you would check a person’s airway then their breathing and then start circulation efforts by pushing on the chest area over their heart. With the new guidelines, the AHA has discovered that if you start with the circulation portion immediately and get the heart pumping and blood pressure up, the patient has a better response and potential for recovery because of the oxygen present in the blood that could get to the major organs through the assistance of chest compressions,” said Herrin. “The survival rate increased from 10% to 40% with this new method, and the earlier the intervention the better a person’s chances are for survival. That’s why it is so important for the public to know how to provide CPR and to do it correctly.”

Last month, Herrin led staff training at the Southeast Georgia Health System’s Education department. As coordinator, Herrin ensures all instructors under his “umbrella” teach according to AHA standards, and will from time-to-time attend other classes to assure instructors are maintaining these standards when teaching. Altamaha Technical College works with area school, hospital and EMS systems to keep their certifications up to date.
