Literacy Rate is appalling |
|
The minimum literacy rate in our area is something that we should be concerned about. Altamaha Tech shows that in its service delivery area consisting of Appling, Jeff Davis, Long and Wayne counties, according to the 2006 census has a staggering average illiteracy rate of 31.25 percent. The highest county in the area has a rate of 36.7 percent.
That means that nearly one third of our population is illiterate. This should not be acceptable. In Georgia, over 1.3 million adults are without a high school diploma or a GED.
Altamaha Tech will be joining other technical schools in Georgia on Sept. 8 to observe International Literacy Day. This is not only a global issue, Altamaha Tech and its 32 sister colleges around the state continuously strive to improve the literacy status in their service delivery area.

Hats off to Altamaha Tech for their efforts to improve literacy in our area. In so doing, they help to improve the lives of all our citizens.
Our local technical school will be hosting a number of activities throughout the month of September, including book readings at local schools, an essay contest, book sale, local author book reading and will conclude with an exciting fundraising activity. Be on the lookout for more details about the upcoming events, or call the college at 912-427-5833 or 800-645-8284.
Let's all join in these efforts. It will be good for the entire community.
