JESUP, Ga. (Dec. 15, 2011) – Altamaha Technical College presented its 2011 Practical Nursing program students at the Jesup Campus with a commemorative rose and pin signifying the successful completion of their coursework Thursday, Dec. 8.

Seventeen students received roses and certificates by nursing instructors Betty Manning, R.N. and Virginia Lee Rothwell, R.N., and clinical instructor Kathy Jern, R.N., during the formal ceremony in the Jesup Campus Auditorium. Donald Mixon, Intensive Care Manager of Wayne Memorial Hospital, was the special guest speaker.

The ceremony commemorates the students’ successful completion of their nursing coursework and clinical rotations.  Having completed their program of study, students have met the Georgia Board of Nursing requirements for a diploma in Practical Nursing and can take the NCLEX-PN board exam. The college has a strong history of success with nursing students passing the NCLEX-PN licensure test at a 100% pass rate last year. To date, five students have successfully completed their board exams, said Manning.

The class of nursing students may participate in the college’s January graduation ceremony.  Altamaha Technical College graduates approximately 60 students in nursing yearly.

Students receiving pins are Vera Allen of Chatham County; Carrol McDaniel of Glynn County; Shamika Roberts of Liberty County; Amy Parker of Long County; Cheryl (Chris) Faircloth, Daphne Gest, Kristie Grover, Melanie Hensley, Sharra Jones, Regina Lewis, Ashland Braddy, Cynthia McBride, Mallorie Poppell, Tera Price, Britney Rice and Lori Smith, all of Wayne County; and, Jordan Strickland of Ware County. Regina Lewis was recognized as an honor graduate.

For two students, the ceremony was a family affair. Chris Faircloth was pinned by Michelle Dent, LPN, (Altamaha Technical College Class of 1997) in memory of Chris’ mother Jeanette Bell Faircloth, who was a member of Wayne County’s first practical nursing class when the College was associated with Okefenokee Technical College in 1969. Daphne Gest was pinned by her aunt, Onnie Osborne, R.N. Osborne served as a clinical instructor for Altamaha Technical College in 1994.

Several students received special awards during the ceremony: Most Professional presented to Daphne Gest by Gail Lewis of the Business & Professional Women’s Club of Jesup; Shirley G. Davis Clinical Award presented to Jordan Strickland by Annette Kirksey, Chief Nursing Officer of Wayne Memorial Hospital; Kiwanis Scholastic Achievement Award presented to Lori Smith by Dr. C. Paul Scott of the Jesup Kiwanis Club; Heart of Nursing Award presented to Regina Lewis by Carey Jones of Jones Healthcare; Wayne County EMS Award presented to Chris Faircloth by Richard Johnson; and, AIR-EVAC Lifeteam Award presented to Carrol McDaniel by Tony Sumrow. Regina Lewis, Lori Smith, Britney Rice, Mallorie Poppell, Kristie Grover and Daphne Gest were presented the Elwanda Carter Perfect Attendance Award by Brenda Sowell, Admission Coordinator of Golden Living Center.
