Tiffany Drawdy, a practical nursing student at Altamaha Technical College from Wayne County, has been named as the college’s winner of the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL).
The announcement was made at the college’s GOAL recognition meeting on February 25, 2010 at the C. Paul Scott Polytechnical Center on the Altamaha Technical College campus.
Drawdy was chosen by a panel of local leaders over three other nominees for the award. The runners-up were Nakia Nixon, Marketing/Management, Jesup Campus; Brenda Maynard, Business Administrative Technology, Golden Isles Campus; and Patricia Davis, Business Administrative Technology, Golden Isles Campus.
GOAL, a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia, honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state’s technical college students. Local GOAL winners are selected at each of the state’s 27 technical colleges as well as the two Board of Regents colleges with technical education divisions.
The announcement of Drawdy as the Altamaha Technical College GOAL winner was made by GOAL Coordinator Cathy Montgomery. Drawdy will now proceed to regional preliminary judging. If chosen as one of the nine finalists, three from each region, then Drawdy will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Atlanta in May where, for two-days, she will compete with GOAL finalists from the other state technical college campuses. A panel of leaders from the business, industry and government sectors will interview them and choose one to be the state’s 2010 GOAL winner and the recipient of the GOAL medallion. The grand prize also includes a new car.
Drawdy said, “I am honored to have been chosen Altamaha Technical College’s GOAL Winner. I plan to represent this college to the best of my ability so that my duties may reflect well on those who have unselfishly invested in my aspirations.”
Drawdy is the daughter of Dewayne and Teresa Mosley of Jesup, GA, and the wife of Justin Drawdy of Jesup, GA. She chose to attend Altamaha Technical College to earn her degree and pursue a career as a Practical Nurse.
Jennifer Evans, Culinary Arts Instructor, was recently named winner of the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence for Altamaha Technical College.
Named in memory of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Central Technical College who received the DTAE Commissioner’s Award of Excellence prior to his untimely death, the award is the state technical college systems’ version of an “instructor of the year” honor. Annually, all 27 technical colleges, plus the Regents system schools with technical divisions, each nominate an instructor to represent their college for the statewide honor. Nominees then compete on a regional basis.
Evans was selected by her peers as ATC’s nominee for the regional competition which will be held March 24 at East Central Technical College. Evans will compete with representatives from the southern region. The winner of the competition will be announced in Atlanta during GOAL Week, May 26-28, 2010.
Altamaha Technical College President Lorette Hoover said, “Chef Jen has labored to produce graduates who meet the highest standards. She takes pride in developing graduates who possess knowledge and skills to be safe and effective workers in the culinary arts field; and who exhibit professionalism, dedication, and work ethics to be model employees. Further, Chef Jen believes technical education is the first choice for those who wish to become dedicated culinary arts professionals.“
During her five years at ATC, Chef Jen has always been involved in the college and in the community. She has taken a leadership role by serving as a judge and lead for the ATC Culinary Arts Team at the Georgia Great Steak Cookoff. She has led her culinary arts students as they prepared food for community events such as the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis County Chamber of Commerce, the Retired Educators Luncheon, Jeff Davis High School Spanish Club, Jeff Davis High School French Club, the Annual Parent Appreciation Dinner for Dual Enrollment Students, the Taste of the Technical Colleges, the Glynn County Expo 2009, several Career Day Cooking Demonstrations, and is responsible for the receptions following the Graduation ceremonies. She is a member of the National Restaurant Association, Georgia Restaurant Association, Foodservice Educators Network International, Women Chefs and Restauranteurs, and Georgia Organics. Chef Jen has always been and continues to be a shining example for her colleagues.
The state Rick Perkins Award winner serves as an ambassador for technical education in Georgia. He or she will make many public appearances throughout the year, including addresses to the Georgia General Assembly, the governor and the Technical College System of Georgia Leadership Conference.
