Altamaha Technical College hosted the Georgia SkillsUSA Region VIII competitions on February 16, 2009. Over 200 students, advisors, and guests from surrounding area high schools, such as Wayne County High, Camden County High, Appling County High, McIntosh Academy, Glynn Academy, Brunswick High, Bradwell Institute, Fitzgerald High, and Woodville Tompkins Technical and Career Institute came to compete in competitions such as Job Interview, Quiz Bowl, Prepared Speech, Nurse Assisting, Carpentry, Residential Wiring, Welding, Computer Maintenance, Collision Repair Technology, Cabinet Making, Masonry, First Aid/CPR, Health Knowledge Bowl, Cosmetology, Automotive Fundamentals, Plumbing, Extemporaneous Speaking and many more.
SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization that promotes education in job-related skills. The event allows high school students to show off their many skills and abilities, and gives them a chance to earn scholarship money for college. The first and second place winners of regional competitions go on to state and possibly national competitions.
“It is amazing to watch these young men and women as they compete in these events. They are so enthusiastic and eager to learn. All of them are quite good in their events! You can immediately tell that they have devoted their time and energies to perfecting their skills,” stated Altamaha Technical College High School Coordinator Rod Lane.
