JESUP, Ga. (November 21, 2011) – Air Evac of Vidalia surprised Altamaha Technical College’s Jesup Practical Nursing Students with a special delivery Nov. 21.
Air Evac pilot Dave Millard landed his Bell 406 Long Ranger helicopter carrying the precious cargo on the campus’ open field before a crowd of about thirty students, faculty, staff and curious onlookers.
Millard’s helicopter brought the pins the students will receive after completing the 12-month program later this month.
The students, led by instructors Betty Manning and Virginia Lea Rothwell, cheered for the safe arrival and hand-off of the pins from Air Evac Director Tony Sumrow to Randy Roderick of Bellville, local Herff Jones owner/operator, who planned to present these prized symbols of achievement to the students during a special ceremony Dec. 8. Herff Jones supplies academic and graduation materials, like caps and gowns, diplomas and class rings.
This is the second year Air Evac has surprised Manning’s students, but it’s the first year they delivered the nursing pins.
“Randy Roderick, owner and operator of Herff Jones, will be contacting his corporate office, but as far as he knows this is the first time an emergency transport helicopter has delivered the nursing pins,” said Manning.
The College annually graduates about 50 nursing students. There are 17 students in this year’s Jesup class.
