ATC Honors National Poetry Month

cliff-crummeyIn honor of April being National Poetry Month, Altamaha Technical College students, faculty, and staff participated in an Open Mic Day.  Everyone had a chance to relax, sit back, and enjoy poetry at its best!  “We have a lot of talent here, and I believe it was enjoyed by all,” stated Cindy Brown, an ATC employee who read a poem written by her grandmother.  People were allowed to read an original poem or one written by their favorite poet.  Prizes were given based on originality and presentation.

First place for originality was given to Cliff Crummey for his poem “Our Home.”  Second place was presented to Stephanie Robb for the poem she wrote titled “Story for Prada.”  Finally, Danielle Martin received a prize for best presentation for her poem/song “The Anthem of an Individual.”   “Selecting winners was very difficult because we, at ATC, are blessed with so many talented students.  I think everyone was pleased with the turnout and participation, and hopefully, this will become a tradition on our campus which everyone will look forward to every year” said English Instructor Rebecca Sharpe who helped organize and judge the event.

First Place:

“Our Home” - written by a soldier
Home is where we lay our heads.
Home is peaceful and serene.
Home is tall pine tress and peanut fields.
Home is the memory of our loved ones.
Home is old time traditions and sweet tea.
Home is safety and happiness.
Home is a place God has blessed,
And so when horrors come, and I think my life may end,
In my mind, it is our home – I would defend.
