Culinary Students Venture Out

culinaryflat
Altamaha Technical College Culinary Arts adult and high school dual enrolled students were able to take a break from their usual culinary studies and venture out to see some experienced chefs at work, the kitchens they work in and tour the facilities they are housed in. “The students were extremely excited to take a field trip to two unique restaurants located just a short drive from Hazlehurst,” stated Chef Jennifer Evans, Altamaha Technical College Culinary Arts Instructor.

The first stop was just up the road in Swainsboro where the students visited Flat Creek Lodge, East Georgia's Premier Hunting and Fishing Resort & Spa.  The students were treated to a tour of the beautiful grounds, lodge, kitchen and dining room and got to sample a selection of award winning artisanal cheeses, made at the on-site dairy.  "It was really cool to see how they were using so many products that they produced there on the property" said one student of the berries, vegetables and herbs grown on the grounds.  From there, the group traveled to Lyons for a tour of Elements Bistro and Grill, a quaint restaurant located in the heart of downtown Lyons.  The students enjoyed samples of several unique and delicious menu items and toured the facilities.  "I loved the open kitchen and seeing how the kitchen was designed.  It really helped me to actually see the concepts I've learned being used in a real work situation", said one the students.  The exposure to the two unique dining and employment opportunities helped give the students a better understanding of the possibilities available to them upon completion of the culinary arts program at Altamaha Technical College.

New day and evening classes begin January 7th.   For more information about the Culinary Arts program please call 912-375-0012 or 800-645-8284.
