Shumans Named Local GOAL Winner
Jesup – ATC has named Diane C. Shumans, Practical Nursing Student, as its 2011 local GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) Winner. Next, Shumans will compete in the regional competition as ATC's representative on March 24, also to be held at ATC in Jesup.
GOAL competition began earlier in the year. Technical college instructors across Georgia identify their most promising students and nominate them for GOAL based on academic achievement and personal leadership. The first phase of GOAL takes place at the local technical college level. As nominees move through an interview process, the screening committee selects the top student to represent their college and community.
Finalists from the regional competition will move on to the state-level competition in Atlanta in May. The winning GOAL student serves as an ambassador for technical education in Georgia. He or she will make many public appearances throughout the year including addresses to the Georgia General Assembly, the Governor, and the Technical College System of Georgia Leadership Conference. The recipient of the statewide GOAL award is recognized as the Technical College System of Georgia’s Student of the Year and a new automobile, sponsored by Chevrolet, is awarded as the grand prize.
Nominating Instructor Sheryl Nipper, RN, BSN, said of Shumans: “As her nursing instructor, I have watched Mrs. Shumans mentor and encourage other students while maintaining excellent study skills and grades. The other students look up to 'Mrs. Diane' for encouragement and wisdom. She is quiet and unassuming and very humble in nature. She does not hesitate to give praise to others. She has one of the highest averages in the nursing program but she is never boisterous and never blows her own horn.”
Shumans, a member of SkillsUSA, and the Student Practical Nursing Club, will also be representing ATC in the upcoming state competition of the Knowledge Bowl. Her work experience includes census enumerator, paraprofessional, business co-owner and office manager. She anticipates receiving her Practical Nursing Degree in June 2011.
When asked why she chose a technical education, Shumans shared,”Receiving my technical education here at Altamaha Technical College has been perfect for me. Professional skills are taught, practiced and will enable me to be an excellent nurse after eighteen months of intense training.”
