Q: Does the Library have WiFi? A: WiFi is now available during school hours at all of the ATC campuses in designated areas (including the libraries and learning resource centers). Look for signs that say Open WiFi.
Q: What is WiFi? A: WiFi, or Wireless Fidelity, is the use of wireless radio frequencies to connect a computer with wireless network cards to a wireless router that sends out the frequencies from a modem. In other words, no cables are needed to connect your computer to the internet. Connection speed varies by location, the number of users on the WiFi, and the capability of your equipment.
Q: How do we access WiFi? A: In order to use WiFi at ATC, you will need to bring your own laptop in. Your laptop will need to have WiFi capabilities build in, or you will need to have purchased and installed a WiFi network card. ATC does not provide wireless cards and does not install them. Our equipment should be compatible with most WiFi equipment, but makes no guarantees that you will be able to connect with the wireless network.
Once your laptop is ready, you need no special passwords or settings. ATC has Open WiFi, which means that it is open to all visitors…no special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required. Once you connect and open the internet, you will have to agree to the Computer and WiFi Use Agreement to finish your connection to the internet. If you do not agree, you lose your wireless session.
Using ATC’s wireless network agreement subjects you to the same rules for network use that would apply to using the school’s computers would. Attempts to circumvent network procedures or to access or manipulate equipment that you are not authorized to use may jeopardize any and all future rights to use ATC’s wireless network or equipment.
Using WiFi, you can check e-mail, surf the Internet, do online research, and visit the ATC library web to search the library catalog and the library’s databases. Although much of the library’s resources are available with the WiFi connection, you will not have access to printers on the wireless network. You will need to save or email your documents to a location with access to a printer in order to print. While surfing the internet you may find that some websites are blocked by our filter.
Q: What about WiFi security? A: Since it is an Open Network, the connection is unsecured. Do not send personal or sensitive data or do any banking or purchasing that you might not want others to see while on the WiFi network.
ATC offers no technical assistance with your configuration or any changes that you might make to your computers’ settings. If you need help, you should contact the manufacturer of your hardware or software. It is your responsibility to provide anit-virus protection and to make sure your equipment is protected. ATC is not responsible for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient, or incomplete security settings or lack of virus protections. You, as the user, assume all risks when using the ATC WiFi network. Any virus-infected computer that connects to the ATC WiFi network will be permanently blocked.
