GED Graduation Held for 2007 Graduates PDF Print E-mail

GED Graduation Held

Altamaha Technical College held a graduation ceremony recently recognizing 35 students who completed their General Educational Development Diploma (GED).  Approximately 200 guests were on site for this exciting event.  Sandra Williams, Adult Education Director stated how proud she was of all the graduates “It takes a lot of dedication and perseverance to successfully complete the program.  Another key factor in the success of any student is the support system they have through their family and friends.”  Sandra went on to say she expects over 60% of the graduates will continue their education at the college level.  Altamaha Technical College’s President Lorette M. Hoover announced that “a total of 229 students graduated in 2007, many of which are current students in the colleges various career programs.”

In fact, last year, the Technical College System of Georgia enrolled some 100,000 students in adult education programs and 18,000 of those Georgians proudly obtained their GED, opening doors to increased earning potential, higher education, and better lives. Another 36,000 men and women enrolled in English language programs.

The GED test provides adults with an opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma. In order to pass the GED exam, a student must pass a series of five tests in writing, social studies, science, interpreting literature and arts, and mathematics. Successfully passing these sections demonstrates that the student has acquired a level of learning that is comparable to that of high school graduates. The GEDTS has set a national standard for the minimum score a student must receive in order to pass the GED; a score that 40% of high school graduates can not attain.

To pass the GED examine a student must score 2,250 or above. To be an Honor Graduate the scores must total 3,000 and above. This year there were two students that exceeded the 3,000 required to be an Honor Graduate. They are Amanda Fogarty and Taneka Sanders.

Altamaha Technical College offers Free classes to help prepare students for the GED test.  Classes are held in all four counties in our service delivery area.  For more information about the programs and services offered through the Adult Education Program call 1-800-645-8284.
